Our newsletter is being sent to all of our local partners from the Farmington/Farmington Hills Chamber of Commerce. The goal of this free newsletter is to make sure local businesses have an opportunity to stay up-to-date with current trends in the Information Technology marketplace.

No more “shrink wrap” on your software

As broadband access to the internet becomes more prevalent for most small businesses and individuals, the expectation that we will continue to purchase our software in a small shrink-wrapped box will change.

Software companies like Microsoft^® and Intuit^® have seen the future. And it will no longer be on sale in your local technology store. With the booming marketplace on line, software companies are looking for ways to deliver their products more quickly and with less cost. This is leading to online applications available for use through your computers browser software. Soon there will be less likelihood that you will “own” a word processor. The future will bring a feature rich word processor usable inside a browser, and not actually installed on your computer.

It’s not just the office applications where we will see these changes. Already, companies like Intuit^® have offered their popular QuickBooks package as an online application. Sure it has limited features today, but as the product matures there will be exciting features which will rival the shrink-wrapped software.
